Smart bins to teach consumers how to sort waste

Back to News
New smart bins are starting to be spotted in high-traffic venues around the world. Smart bins, like Bin.E, EvoBin and Trashbot, sort trash into recycling categories by recognizing different types of waste via sensors, cameras, image recognition and artificial intelligence. The computer vision will identify the material, classify whether it is recyclable or not and then separate and sort it accordingly. Some bins will tell the consumer exactly where to place a specific container. The waste is then compressed to take up less space.

The future of waste technology

Certain systems will be able to communicate fullness statuses to a central hub, so that stations can be collected when necessary and eliminate overflows.Public smart bins are also able to be paired with an app where consumers will get validation from recycling by earning rewards. The idea behind this is to promote sustainability and environmental awareness through incentives.

Smart bins in the home

As this innovative technology becomes more accessible and available for home use, it would mean an end to the time-consuming process of recycling by hand, the confusion over what packages are made from and how they should be recycled.Even though many South Africans are recycling, they are often not doing it correctly. The technology will be integral in educating consumers about how to sort waste. It would also be a win-win for companies that are under pressure to be more sustainable as the bins will also be able to gather data about customer habits.___Averda is a leading waste management provider with over 50 years of experience across three continents.
